Rock N Roll Nightmare

Have you ever come across something so head scathingly bizarre, you just can help wanting more; this is the kinda of experience I relish. I love setting out to find as much info as I can on my new discovery. Uncovering titbits on the internet or at the library, discovering a whole new world that has been hiding away and only known by a select few.

My most recent said experience was the discovery of Jon Mikl Thor, JMT is a bodybuilding champion, actor, songwriter, screenwriter, historian, 80’s big hair cock metal musician and. vocalist. But more on that later.

It was purely by accident I stumbled across a record at my local vinyl store Backbeat Records, Recruits (Wild in the streets) is the third album by Canadian heavy metal band Thor. It is also the soundtrack for the 1986 film Recruits. Flipping over the record to look a the back I was instantly sold, big hair, medieval props and a girl band member named Pantera. All for the princely some of $7, Hilarious.

So I grabbed the album and hurriedly went back to my Studio to play it, I wasn’t disappointed it was everything the cover promises soaring guitars, screechy vocals solid bass riffs and more cock than a hen house. That’s when I decided I needed to find out more about this mysterious Canadian heavy metal bodybuilding historian, and what I found out you would never had guessed.

I turns out that JMT was a very successful athlete, As a bodybuilder, he was the first Canadian to win both the Mr. Canada and Mr. USA titles. During his bodybuilding career, he has achieved over 40 titles around the world.

If this wasn’t weird enough As a musician, he is the front man for the heavy metal band Thor, billing himself as "The Legendary Rock Warrior". JMT started touring as front man for the band THOR in 1973. The band was first known as "Mikl Body Rock" and "Thor and the Imps" before deciding on the name THOR. He combined strength feats, props, costumes and showmanship with music such as bending solid steel bars in his teeth and having solid concrete blocks smashed off his chest with a sledgehammer. THOR toured Canada and the USA throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

If the idea of a bodybuilding metal lord Still isn’t enough for you,  In 1986 Jon Mikl Thor retired from live performances and started to write and produce films. His career in acting amounting to starring roles in such films as Zombie Nightmare, and Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare..

So what was my next move you ask?, Well dear reader it isn’t obvious, my sole mission of the next day and a half was to track down JMT 80’s video nasties. So after some more net research believe it or not I found them (thank you eBay and Amazon) and three weeks later I had in my hot hands copies of Zombie Nightmare, Rock n Roll Night Mare and the 2005 RnR Nightmare squeal Intercessor: Another Rock 'N' Roll Nightmare.

So what were the flicks like? Well let’s start with Zombie Nightmare, after a promising opening credit sequence, featuring the strains of Motorhead's "Ace of Spades", it seems the film can do no wrong. The overall result is a film that's never as good as it wants to be and ends up falling extremely short of it's early promise.

Our favourite steel-bending rock god thespian, Jon Mikl Thor, plays a dork in a hooded sweatshirt who becomes victim to a hit-and-run by Tia Carrere and Co. His mother calls upon the neighbourhood voodoo priestess, played by Manuska Rigaud (think Karen Black and Tina Turner's lovechild on PCP), to resurrect her dead son, so he can wreak revenge on the tire-squealing Punks. One by one, the no-good teenagers meet their end by the hands of the zombified dork in the hooded sweatshirt.

ADAM WEST IN ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE
Halfway into the film, Adam West makes a welcome appearance, playing the local police chief who may have something to do with the intricate proceedings.
For those who may ponder Adam West's involvement in such a film, allow me to put it into perspective, how many actors can say they've worked with The Three Stooges AND Jon Mikl Thor? I rest my case.

Thor went on to star in a whole another nightmare, "ROCK 'N' ROLL NIGHTMARE" In Rock n Roll Nightmare an 80's metal band go to an old house to record an album. It's possessed, and demons start killing people. In between death scenes the band rocks out. Thor himself wrote and produced the film and soundtrack. That's really all you need to know, because nothing else in the movie makes a lick of sense. The direction, acting, special effects, and script???, are absolute pieces of trash.
That's what allows Thor's stage presence to really shine. It's really just a long music-video that has a horror story thrown in. The music is classic, if you like that style, and if you don't you shouldn't be watching it in the first place.. If you love comic books, glam metal, and mythology and your movies with more cheese than a triple cheese hamburger pizza this is the crown-jewel of entertainment. An absurd good time!!

So what about the last one you mentioned? Well let me tell you this, It's BAD. This is hallucinatorily bad. This is so much further down the scale than Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare that you'll laugh hysterically rereading all the one-star Comments on IMDb for the original-poor fools! You think this is bad? Wait till the sequel comes out twenty years later, then you'll REALLY see something that you will bring up your lunch!

Jon Mikl Thor 1985

Jon Mikl Thor in 2005

However If you believe, really believe, in the healing power of bad film, this is a can't-miss. No hints, no clues as to what you'll be exposed to-OK, just one: the magic scene in which Jon-Mikl, now pushing three hundred pounds, in floppy rubber armour, is attacked in a park by a SINGLE STRAND of Swedish ivy. Does he defeat it with his mighty broadsword? You'll never know till you see The Original Rock Warrior .

So there you have it Brothers and Sisters of Rock and Roll!! Hear my words!! Go forth and find these these masterpieces of trash cinema!! You too can bask in the glory of Jon Mikl Thor the inventor of Muscle-rock.

He's been around since the early seventies, He still tours and releases albums. And bands such as Manowar, Iron Maiden, Wasp, even Kiss cannot deny being influenced by him. In short, I think JMT sums it up best  when he plays Jon Triton in Rock n roll Nightmare and I quote:

You've overstepped your line again, Bub. There's a creator's highest law that keeps you in your dark place and yet you and your brethren still insist on coming into this world and trying to steal a place in the world of the living. When will you ever learn? - I think there is a little something in that for all of us really.

PASTE MODERNISM 3

Paste Modernism is the largest celebration of the medium of 'paste-ups' in Australia, and is now presented again for the 3rd time at OUTPOST PROJECT on Cockatoo Island. Throughout its inception it has found residence in staples of the Sydney art scene, starting initially with the artist run residence Hibernia House in a guerilla exhibition, and finally graduating to the heritage walls of Cockatoo Island. Every available inch of over 300 square meters of wall space will be covered with the pasted artworks of over 100 local and international artists.

The 'Paste-Up' is an ever-expanding and innovative form of street art, that involves an artist making their work onto varying sizes of paper and then applying it to walls and surfaces within their urban environment using wheat-paste or wallpaper glue. Whether as black and white multiplied photocopies, colourful hand painted murals or thought provoking text pieces, the 'Paste-Up' is an immediate and bold contemporary art-form.

Paste Modernism Progress shots
Obscene muscleman Paste Up
The medium explores not only aesthetic values, but is often politically and socially motivated - which allows experimentation both by accomplished artists as well as people with little or no artistic training. With all other street art genres, a hierarchy is in place based usually on the skill and years of training and practice of each artist (aerosol-can control/complexity of a stencil etc). Most 'Paste-Up' artists also have years of experience, creating intricate and well-planned artworks - however anybody right now, could find a photograph or jpeg that resonates with them, take it to a digital printer and with relatively little expense, print it out in wallpaper width paper sheets and put it up on the streets.

Paste Modernism Progress
Curated by Ben Frost, Paste Modernism 3 includes artists such as: Pure Evil, Copyright, Dan Baldwin, Anthony Lister, Drab, Urban Cake Lady, Heesco, Bei Badgirl, Houl, Creon, John Doe, Simon Lovelace, RJ, Mats?!, Bridge Stehli, Esjay, Anton Benois, Numskull, Bennett, Vexta, Tez, Bunkwaa, Jumbo, Zap, Skel, HA-HA, SMC, 1337, Obscene, Felix, Konsume Terror, Pigeonboy, Vars, Aelhra, Qwux and more.

Saturday Morning Memories- A Post Apocalyptic Barbarian

The year - 1994. The place - Earth. The event - a runaway planet flies between the earth and the moon. The result - really high tides plus the end of civilization as we know it. Cue the REM song 'It's the End of the World As We Know It' and party like it was 1994. The down side - lots of people died and much of the world was ravaged. The good news - they died before Episode 1 and 2 could really tick them off.
Of course this didn't really happen on our earth, but it did on millions of television sets in the late 70's and early 80's when 'Thundarr the Barbarian' premiered.
The premise was that after the aforementioned planet kept earth from having a nice day, society rebuilt itself in a somewhat different image. The show then flashed forward 2000 years to find a strange new world full of swords, sorcery and super-science.
It was also filled with Thundarr, his buddy Ookla the Mok, and Ariel, the resident sorceress. Beyond the backstory for the show, the premise was relatively simple. The three heroes would travel the land, get in adventures and fight for what they felt was right, toppling injustice and evil along the way.

Thundarr
What do you call a buff guy with bad English? Some might call him the next governor of California, but in this case we'll call him Thundarr.
Thundarr doesn't have a foreign accent, he's just not the brightest guy around, but he makes up for it with a fabulous exercise program!
The good news for the ladies out there is that he wears a fur loincloth and vest, and some furry boots. This makes this character the perfect vehicle for a movie, starring Hugh Jackman as Thundarr. Why? Did we mention
the loincloth and vest?
The bad news? The guy cannot get a tan
, even when just wearing a loincloth, vest and furry boots. Thundarr at first seems like a mindless brute, but he does have a good heart and a mind. And he carries a magical sword to hit you with if you make fun of him. And not just any sword, but the fabulous Sun Sword! The Sun Sword is sort of a low tech version of a light saber, and the hilt of the sword issues the magical blade at Thundarr's command. The blade is gone when not in use, for easy storage on Thundarr's wristband, and without the power of Velcro®!

Ariel

If the fantasy movies have taught us anything, behind every adventure hero there is a hot chick to motivate him and give us all yet another unattainable woman.
For Thundarr this comes in the form of Ariel, who's as smart and powerful as she is attractive. Ariel is the brains of the group and she's also a sorceress, trained in the mystic arts. Tack onto that the fact that she's a Princess, wears thigh-high boots with h
eels and you have the total package. She might seem perfect, but there is a catch. Her stepfather is Sabian, and evil wizard also known as an incredible cheapskate. If you were to actually get far enough in to marry Ariel, you'd be treated to a wedding by the local Justice of the Peace, and a reception at Sizzler. Mmmm-mmmm! That and a nasty curse or two.

Ookla
Usually you have a mix of brains and brawn, but with this trio you have an excess of brawn. And the brawniest guy is Ookla, Thundarr's pal and resident Mok. The first question you may ask is 'what's a Mok?', and the answer is simple. A Mok is half-Man, half-something else, and he's all stinky if you leave him out in the rain all night. However, he is loyal, trustworthy and will work for Scooby snacks. Ookla isn't loquacious or eloquent, be he is a terror in battle. His powerful Mok-muscles can tear apart phone books and his sharp teeth and leave marks. Big ones. He's also an ace with a bow and he has his own special horse to ride, sort of a cross between a horse and a Mok. That would make his mount one-half horse, one-quarter man and one-quarter something (for those keeping score at home). His mount stinks when wet, but only half as much as he does.

Ruby-Spears Entertainment spawned Thundarr, which came across as a futuristic comic book. This was due in no small part to the creators of the show and characters. Comics Legends Alex Toth and Jack 'King' Kirby were on board early, and Alex designed the three main characters for the show with the King designing characters and vehicles for the show. The world was created by Dave High and the first writer brought in was noted comics writer Steve Gerber (creator of Howard the Duck). Clearly, the show had great genes!

The show ran for five years on ABC before it was moved over to NBC. The ratings for the show were still good though NBC was interested in the show simply to broadcast re-runs. They figured that they could keep people watching without spending more money on new shows, and it ran on NBC for a year and half. The saddest part was that no new shows were made after it left ABC. Yay capitalism!
The characters themselves are courtesy of a future disaster, though some of the voice actors might be familiar. Nellie Bellflower voice Ariel, and she was also Eowyn in the animated Return of the King. Henry Corden was Ookla, and he has along history of voice work, with many parts that actually have words you can understand! The barbarian himself was played by the late Robert Ridgely, who might be more recognizable as Colonel James from Boogie Nights. Yep, Thundarr is a pimp and you'll never think of the fabulous sun sword the same again!

B GRADE SCREEN GODDESSES

B GRADE ITALIAN SCREEN GODDESS -Sabrina Siani

If you're familiar with the innumerable sword & sorcery flicks Italian cinema churned out during the 1980s, chances are you've seen Sabrina Siani.

Either naked or in extremely skimpy outfits. The beautiful, blond starlet (real name: Sabrina Seggiani, but sometimes billed Sabrina Sellers) graced many a cut-price fantasy epic, typecast as an Amazonian princess or gutsy jungle girl.

Jess Franco director of the 1980 Mondo Cannibale, wasn't a fan (calling her: "the stupidest person I've ever met"), but what does he know? Siani may not have set the screen alight as a teen cannibal queen in Franco's dreadful Mondo Cannibale (1980), but at least she didn't direct it.

Following a brief stint in sex comedies and Franco's calamitous gut-muncher, Siani soaked up the sun in Blue Lagoon rip-off Blue Island (1982) and played a feisty, female Tarzan in Umberto Lenzi's Incontro Nell'Ultimo Paradiso (1982), before making her mark as a sword-swinging maiden in Aristide Massaccesi's Ator the Fighting Eagle (1982).

Contrary to Franco's sentiments, Siani had a lot to offer: a winning athleticism, sex appeal, and a charismatic screen presence. Whether slaying monsters, befriending bears (!), or smouldering seductively, she frequently upstaged bland beefcake, leading men like Peter McCoy (Pietro Torrisi in The Throne of Fire 1983) and Miles O'Keefe (Ator Movie Series 1982- 1987).

Siani played a memorable wicked witch in Lucio Fulci's deliriously daffy Conquest (1983), naked save for a leather g-string and a python, with her face hidden beneath a metal mask. During the surreal climax, it splits open to reveal a hideous, rotting visage (which says something about Fulci's feelings towards women).

Arguably Siani's finest hour, was appearing as the aptly named Golde
n Goddess in Michele Massimo Taranti's superior, Sangraal la Spaada di Fuoco/Sword of the Barbarians (1982). Here, she emerges amidst a shower of glitter, delectably half nude as usual in a crown and jewelled thong, to romp with an understandably smitten barbarian hero.

Films like Sangraal, Gunan Il Guerriro/The king of the Barbarian (1982), and Throne of Fire (1983) feature Siani in a curious cocktail of childish stories, extreme gore and soft-core eroticism - leaving you wandering who the target audience were.

After reuniting with Massacesi for a substantial sci-fi role in 2020: Texas Gladiators (1984), Siani hit the big time when respected Italian auteur Dino Risi cast her in his medieval comedy Dagobert (1984) alongside Euro stars like Michele Serrault and Carole Bouquet.

Thereafter, Siani graced one last film, Stelvio Mas
si's Black Cobra (1987) - a vehicle for blaxploitation legend Fred Williamson - before she disappeared like a lovely mirage. Hopefully, half-naked amidst a shower of glitter.

 Filmography 1979 -1988

The Black Cobra (1987)
Movie directed by Stelvio Massi
Early in "Black Cobra," Detective Robert Malone (Fred Williamson) establishes himself as a maverick, uncompromising policeman when he guns down several criminals during a hostage standoff. Next, he finds himself protecting a female photographer who has witnessed a murder. She is sought by a moronic gang of motorcyclists who have been murdering and raping at will. Malone finds them, confronts them, and takes care of (police) business.

The Ultimate Mission (1988)
Movie directed by Ferdinando Baldi
This film's history is more interesting than the film itself since it was shot in north Korea with the blessing of Kim Il-sung! It's about an evil drug dealer/nazi who uses "deer-serum" (!) to create a race of übermensch (supermen) and of course a good guy blowing lots of stuff up. We get to see very little of these Nazi experiments, but more of screaming men with machine guns and huts blowing up. We also get to, Mark Greogry and Sabrina Siani, together at last. If only Conrad Nichols would have shown up the circle of Italian loser actors would have been complete.

Aenigma (1987)
Movie directed by Lucio Fulci
Kathy is an outcast at an elite New England boarding school whom lands in a coma resulting from accidentally being hit by a car during a cruel practical joke against her by several car loads of her tormentors. A little later, Eva, a new arrival to the school, takes over Kathy's old room and begins socializing with some of the girls responsible for Kathy's condition. It turns out that Eva is a pawn under the control of the comatose Kathy from her hospital bed in seeing revenge against those whom did her wrong, while Kathy's physician, meets and begins dating Eva whom also targets his latest girlfriend.

Movie directed by Dino Risi
A rare film that illustrates the barbaric middle ages of Europe in a realistic manner. At first glance, it may seem crude to some with its nudity and humour, but this first impression dissipates with the consistent touch of silliness that keeps you smiling.

Uccelli d'Italia (1984)
Movie directed by Ciro Ippolito
The movie consists of a number of short sketches based on the Uccelli d'Italia album by the Italian demential group Squallor. Among others, we see a strange encounter between Judas and Jesus and a Brazilian surgeon who dances the samba on the work floor. The title of the movie is a parody of the name of the Italian national anthem, "Fratelli d'Italia" (Brothers of Italy). It literally means "Birds of Italy," but "bird" in Italian is also slang for "penis."

Conquest (1983)
Movie directed by Lucio Fulci
Italian sword and sorcery epic from splatter director Lucio Fulci loosely inspired from the Hercules mythos about a young man, armed with a magical bow and arrows, on a mystical journey through a mystical land to rid it of all evil and joins forces with an outlaw to take down an evil witch bent on claiming the magic bow for evil. The two warriors take on all kinds of nasty creatures along the way to fill scenes of gory violence.

Blue Island (1982)
Movie directed by Luigi Russo (as John Wilder)
After an airplane crash, a handsome couple is left stranded on a tropical desert island. Bonnie and Billy are forced to fight against nature and the inhospitable environment to survive. Then soon learn to live with the environment then suddenly a large man-beast appears and threatens their heavenly and exotic ménage. So this paradise can change into hell... Sexy blond Sabrina Siani, who has starred mostly in Italian barbarian films, stars in this Italian rip-off of the film THE BLUE LAGOON. As this is an Italian rip-off, the sexual content significantly surpasses it's inspiration

Daughter of the Jungle (1982)
Movie directed by Umberto Lenzi
Two young people travel to the Amazon for a research study, but they buy naphtha lighter fluid instead of gasoline and become stranded without being able to reach their destination. They are captured by the natives and their situation seems hopeless. But the landing of a seaplane gives them confidence; but they fall from the frying pan into the fire. As there would be rescuers are slavers hoping to find rubies using the natives as slaves. They manage to escape by pretending to know where you can find the rubies, then run away and make a big discovery: a white girl acting like Tarzan and baptized the daughter of the jungle.

The Hunters of the Golden Cobra (1982)
Movie directed by Antonio Margheriti
An American soldier and a British intelligence agent try to track down an ancient relic called the Golden Cobra, rumoured to have supernatural powers. Extremely fast paced and entertaining Indiana Jones- clone from Margheriti. The plot is a ridiculous excuse to keep the pace moving from plane wrecks to car chases and perilous mountains, Contains some impressive scale models of planes and stuff.

The Sword of the Barbarians (1982)
Movie directed by Michele Massimo Tarantini
A swordsman's wife is murdered by followers of the evil Goddess Rani. He vows vengeance upon the cult and journeys to the Ark of the Templars to get a magic crossbow that will help him accomplish his mission.

The Throne of Fire (1983)
Movie directed by Franco Prosperi
Standard muscleman fantasy finds Siegfreid fighting evil personified in the guise of Morak. Morak is the son of the devil's messenger, Belial. Morak is attempting to take the throne of evil "on the day of the night in the day", or rather during an eclipse. To escape instant death by flames, before sitting on the throne, he must also wed Valkari. Siegfried who is invulnerable except to fire and gains temporary powers of invisibility (per "The Rings of Nibelung"), of course, battles Morak to save the beloved princess.

Ator, the Fighting Eagle (1982)
Movie directed by Joe D'Amato
The son of Torren learns of his heritage, goes to avenge the deaths of his fellow villagers, and rescue his sister/love interest from the evil Dakkar and his spider cult. Ator battles giant spiders, swordsmen cloaked in shadow, re-animated dead warriors, and horribly hideous witches.

Gunan, King of the Barbarians (1982)
Movie directed by Franco Prosperi
Gunan (Peter McCoy) and his brother (Giovanni Cianfriglia) are raised by a tribe of amazons. It is prophesied that one day, Gunan shall free the land from the evil warlord Nuriak (Emil Messina), however the first time Gunan meets his enemy, he wastes so much time talking to Nuriak that the bad guy can summon help. This never would have happened to Arnie. Anyway, while Gunan recovers from this failure, he falls in love with stunning blonde Lenna (Sabrina Siani). When Lenna becomes a captive of Nuriak, a second attempt to fulfill the prophecy is due... and this time, Gunan is really angry.

2020 Texas Gladiators (1982)
Movie directed by Joe D'Amato, George Eastman
In a post-apocalyptic Texas, a band of warriors fight against a fascist regime that is trying to take control of all surviving population.

La dottoressa preferisce i marinai (1981)
Movie directed by Michele Massimo Tarantini
Paola Senatore plays a doctor in a hotel where a man repeatedly fails to commit suicide, a pair of window washers witness a murder by a hit man, a suspicious wife checks up on her husband who happens to be having an affair with Paola Senatore and other assorted hi-jinks.

Pierino medico della SAUB (1981)
Movie directed by Giuliano Carnimeo
The film is
a sort of spin-off of the character played by Peter Vitali in a series of films in the eighties, from which it takes, albeit with a different name, the farcical nature. The production was carried out in the hospital Roman Eugene.

College Girl on Vacation (1980)

The tribe has adopted her as a white goddess.

The New Godfathers (1979)
Movie directed by Alfonso Brescia
The Poliziotteschi genre (Italian Cop movies) is mostly populated by maverick cops and sadistic criminals; so The New Godfathers is something of an original addition to the genre. As the Italian title suggests; this film focuses on contraband - which a popular focus for this genre, but rather than focus on one side of the war; the film is instead bolstered by a working relationship between a customs officer and a top criminal as they work together for mutual gain.

Where Can You Go Without the Little Vice? (1979)
Movie directed by Marino Girolami
Two detectives (Renzo Montagnani & Alvaro Vitali)two guys , are hired to discover if a rich industrialist is having an affair. And this causes a myriad of funny gags, and events to occur that make you laugh until you cry!!!

Napoli... la camorra sfida, la città risponde (1979)
Movie directed by Alfonso Brescia
Italian crime film made strictly for local audiences ie Napoli and so no English language version but this is so good that doesn't matter.Mario Merola plays the character he plays in every Brescia movie, the Mafia don who everyone loves,a tough but nice guy.Unfortunatly Antonio Sabato arrives and starts demanding protection money from Merola and all the local shopkeepers, businessmen etc which finally leads up to a rather strange but violent showdown.
